Is your post office shutting down? Revealed, the first 215 branches set for closure
By SEAN POULTER
More than 2,500 post offices are set to close.
The first cull of the 2,500 post offices earmarked for closure has begun.
Customers of 215 branches nominated for the axe yesterday have just six weeks to challenge the decision.
The halving of the customary 12-week consultation is being seen as a sign of the speed with which Post Office Ltd intends to dismantle the national network.
The 215 post office branches listed for closure
The announcement put 215 branches in Kent, the East Midlands and East Yorkshire on notice of closure.
In Kent, 58 branches could go, the East Midlands could lose 88 and East Yorkshire 69.
Nottingham and the surrounding area will be badly hit, with 20 sub-post offices set to be axed.
Ten could go in Derby and Dartford, Kent, could lose six.
In total, the loss of 2,500 post offices by the end of next year represents more than one in five of the 14,300-strong network.
It will mean many communities losing easy access to full post office services.
Some will have to make do with a touring van offering some counter services.
Age Concerns Gordon Lishman said: ”The fact that the Government and the Post Office are ploughing through the local consultations in six weeks suggests that decisions may have already been made.
“We know the vast majority of older people consider their post office to be a lifeline, with many relying on it as a one-stop shop to access cash and benefits, pay bills, get advice and information, and socialise.
“This lifeline must not be severed.”
The Post Office says that after the closures, 95 per cent of the population should be within three miles of a branch in rural areas and one mile in urban areas.
Its managing director, Alan Cook, said the aim is to provide essential services and support retail businesses and the local economy in as many communities as possible.
The Department of Business said: “Post offices continue to play an important social and economic role, but four million fewer people are using them each week than two years ago.”
This is said to have led to losses of £4million a week.
Whitehall has driven this rundown by shifting payment of pensions and benefits directly into bank accounts, rather than via post offices.
This has killed trade for many outlets.
The closures are the latest in a raft of Royal Mail cuts.
The second post has gone, while the bulk of the remaining daily delivery may move to the afternoon.
Collections have also been run down.
The closures are part of wider cost-cutting by Royal Mail.
The threat to 40,000 jobs has led to strikes by mail staff, the latest of which starts tomorrow at noon.
Another 48-hour walkout will begin on Monday.
• Martin Bailey-Dalton found out his sub-post office was due to be axed just three weeks after paying £250,000 for the business.
“Customers have been in tears,” he said.
“Quite often, we are the only people they see in a week. At a quiet time, they will come in and buy a stamp just so they can chat to someone for ten minutes.”
His post office near Beverley, East Yorkshire, is no sleepy village affair. Transactions amount to more than £150,000 a week and 250 customers use it to collect pensions.
It also serves a number of people running businesses using eBay.
“This is a thriving and profitable business,” said Mr Bailey-Dalton.
His customers now face having to go into Beverley – a trip of nearly a mile.
”That may not sound far, but these include many elderly people. We have blind customers who we need to see across the road.”
Mr Bailey-Dalton, 35, and his wife, Margaret, moved to Yorkshire with their three-year-old daughter after both being made redundant.
Now they have a large mortgage on a shop that will have to close.
“We’ve been told the public consultation will make little difference to the closure decision,” he said.
